Colour Combinations and a New Belt

As a graduation gift, I'm getting a serger!!! I am very excited and can't wait to start playing around with it. I am hoping to eventually be able to maybe sell some of my pieces on Etsy. I have been reading vintage sewing books to get some inspiration for designs and came across this section in a sewing book from 1922. Often illustrations are in black and white, so getting an idea of what colour combinations were popular I found very interesting. Some certainly sound....uhh.... bold.

Speaking of bold, check out my awesome new leopard print belt! I love it!  I actually made it myself  out of a printed elastic I picked up at the fabric store. I may post a tutorial if anyone is interested.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

That's All.

  1. I find colour combination in my eras of fashion interest absolutely fascinating. If you know of more reading sources please point them out to me.

Some of these not only appear decidedly bold, but also surprisingly modern. Like cerise and yellow. I've seen that somewhere the other day, it looked fresh and upbeat and very very modern. Very 1922 too, by the looks of it. It simply delights me to find this sort of information.

  2. Wow. And now people only wear black...

I really enjoy your blog, and wanted to ask if you've read the Miss Silver mysteries by Patricia Wentworth? You might like them - nothing mind-blowing, but there's a lot of references to their clothes in them. And in a few the down-on-her-luck lady heroine has to make a living as a - gasp! - model, parading the finest fashion in front of dowdy dowagers. Also, Miss Silver always knits.

    1. No I haven't, but I will definitely keep an eye out for them next time I'm in a book store. Thanks for the suggestion :)

  3. Yes a tutorial on the belt please. I love elastic belts, they give my apple figure more of an hourglass illusion, but aside from black, I have a hard time finidng colors I want in my size, would love to be able to make them.

  4. Wow!!! What a seriously awesome graduation present, dear gal. Congratulations on all of your achievements - and on your new serger, too.

Colour is so important to me. I've been known to don head-to-toe black before or opt for a subdued palette, but by and large, I need a dose of colour in my wardrobe (and home decor) most of the time. It just makes getting dressed (and wearing your clothes) so much more fun IMO. This list is wonderful - thank you so much for sharing! I see some old rose and yellow in my future! :)
